Complementary Consultation

Are we a good fit? Choosing a birth team is important. We offer a “get to know you” consult so we can all get acquainted and so you and your family can ask the important questions. We offer these consults via Zoom and in-person at one of our two Twin Cities metro area locations.

Initial Prenatal Visit

The first prenatal visit with the Trillium team usually happens towards the end of your first trimester, at 10-12 weeks. If you have received prenatal care previous to choosing home birth with Trillium, we will ask you to complete a Release of Information to transfer your records. We have full lab services and are able to draw blood, collect urine and provide all necessary and desired prenatal labs and ultrasounds.

24-7 Availability

When you hire the Trillium team, you get access to your midwives when you need us. We ask that non-urgent matters be handled through our secure web portal. Phone calls are reserved for labor and birth calls and urgent matters.

Prenatal Visits

Prenatal care is offered in person and virtually, every 4-5 weeks until 28 weeks, every 2-3 weeks until 36 weeks, a home visit in your home at 36 or 37 weeks, then weekly visits from 36 weeks until your birth. These visits are 45 minutes long.

Waterbirth

All Trillium families have the option to use one of our waterbirth tubs for hydrotherapy in labor and water birth. The benefits of deep water immersion in labor are immense and we eliminate all barriers by making this a part of your birth package.

Continuous Labor Support

Once labor is established and your baby is on their way, the midwives come to you and provide continuous labor support. We still encourage the presence of doulas and love having them part of the birth team if you choose.

Care During Labor, Birth and Early Postpartum

We continue our care through your early postpartum period, usually 3-4 hours from the time of birth. We stay close by monitoring you and your baby until you and baby are stable and the newborn assessment is complete. We stay at your home until everyone including the baby has eaten a meal, you’ve emptied your bladder, the birth tub has been emptied, the room has been tidied, and the laundry is done.

Newborn Exam and Assessment

We perform a complete head-to-toe newborn exam within a few hours of the birth, offering erythromycin eye ointment and vitamin K injection if you choose.

Postpartum Visits

A majority of the postpartum care is provided in your home with scheduled home visits at 24 hours, 3 days, and 5-7 days. We offer an optional visit at 2-3 weeks, virtual or in-person and a final 6 week visit back at our home clinic.

Routine Newborn Screenings

We administer all the recommended newborn screenings. Critical congenital heart defect screening (CCHD), the metabolic blood spot test (PKU) and a hearing screening. These screenings are time sensitive and are offered at the 24 hour visit.

Postpartum and Newborn Care for Six Weeks

Midwives are trained and licensed to provide complete care for you and your newborn for a full six weeks. Along with our scheduled visits we offer support as needed for whatever your fourth trimester brings your way. This may be in the form of phone calls, emails, in-person visits and referrals to complementary providers as needed.

Lactation Counseling and Support

The Trillium team has extensive experience and additional training to recognize and support many common feeding challenges. It’s our priority to help you meet your feeding goals.

Optimal Fetal Positioning Assessment

How your baby presents at the time of birth matters. The Trillium team is well versed in many of the modalities that can help you and your baby find the best way forward: Spinning Babies, Integral Touch of Birth - Myofascial Therapy, Cranio Sacral Level I, and BRAVA Core Health are a few of the modalities we employ.

Placenta Encapsulation

We offer placenta encapsulation at a reduced rate for Trillium families, using either the steam (TCM) method or raw preparation.

Preconception Counseling and Nutritional Support

As you plan and prepare for a pregnancy, come see us for nutritional support, a review of your health history and any necessary labs to optimize a healthy pregnancy physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Referrals to Community Resources

We are deeply rooted in the birth and wellness community and know the practitioners that can enhance your childbearing year. We are happy to provide referrals to providers and practitioners of many different complementary modalities, to support you in having a fulfilling childbearing experience.

Sliding Scale Fee Model

Our fees are competitive with the Twin Cities market and we have allowed for a sliding scale based on your individual family budget. Our comprehensive midwifery care package for pregnancy, birth and postpartum costs $4,500-$6,500. We will provide you with resources to thoughtfully choose where to land on our no-questions-asked Sliding Scale. See our FAQ page for more information about payment and insurance coverage for home birth.

Vaginal Birth After Cesarean (VBAC)

Having a home birth after a previous surgical birth is safe. We offer home birth and water birth for people choosing a vaginal birth after a cesarean birth. Some special circumstances may apply to your individual history.
